ALOR ARCHIPELAGO

The Alor archipelago, as the final link in the chain stretching east of Bali, Sumbawa and Flores, is a series of rugged volcanic islands.

Geographically, Alor lies at a crossroads. It is located more or less north of West Timor, distantly south of Sulawesi and Maluku, and to the east of Wetar and eventually Papua. Alor is the largest island in the archipelago. Other islands in the archipelago include Pantar, Kepa, Buaya, Ternate (Alor), Pura and Tereweng. Administratively, the Alor archipelago forms its own regency within the province of East Nusa Tenggara.

This cultural-rich archipelago which is home to no fewer than 100 tribes speaking 8 languages ​​and 52 dialects, hiding the beauty and extraordinary splendor. The land which is decorated with collapsed red clay roads, jagged peaks, white sandy beaches and crystal clear bays to enchanting oceanic wonders offering incredible diving.

Although it is not yet as popular as Raja Ampat or Komodo Island, the waters around the archipelago offer equally enthralling spectacles. There are at least 50 dive spots stretching from Alor Island to Pantar Island, and several surrounding islets. Some of the best sites are found along the Pantar Strait.

The Pantar Strait plunges to depths of over 1,000 meters and especially between Pura and Pantar, strong currents protect an astonishing biodiversity and some very well-protected reefs, also attract predators such as hammerhead sharks from the depths.

For non-divers there are many impressive snorkelling opportunities. The west coast of Alor, from Alor Kecil north to Alor Bear and along to Sebanjar, offers extremely good snorkelling.
